Copper Cathode: Chemistry, Standard and Brand

A cathode should be evaluated through chemistry, applicable standard, producer/brand, physical condition and documentary provenance—not a headline purity figure alone.

1. Start with the controlling specification

A bilateral contract should state the applicable cathode specification and acceptance method. Where LME deliverability is relevant, the buyer should separately verify that the product meets an accepted Grade A standard and is an LME-approved brand.

2. Chemistry is necessary but not sufficient

Cu content and trace elements help establish product quality, but laboratory chemistry does not prove title, producer identity, brand approval or that the tested sample represents the full lot.

3. Tie assay to the lot

Sampling, bundle references, seals, chain of custody and independent laboratory controls help connect the certificate to the actual material being purchased.

4. Verify physical and documentary provenance

Producer markings, lot/bundle records, warehouse evidence, title documents and export records should be internally consistent with the seller and cargo.

5. Price the physical basis

Cathode pricing may reference LME or another agreed benchmark, with a premium or discount reflecting brand, location, availability, freight, credit and delivery terms. The quotation period should be explicit.
